    I have been stuck in this god forsaken mitten for some time and understandably great sushi here is like a great lake in Arizona. Rare but worth checking out when a good one is found. Dont get me wrong sushi is everywhere, so many places are trying to cash in on the craze. If we can call it that anymore. Just the same we are not coastal so "fresh" fish is not something we are going to have at our beck and call. All that nonsense being said, Maru does a great job of bringing to our lovely state the taste of the coast. I have eaten there twice and both times they were slammed yet somehow my girl and I got in fast. I am not saying 40 minutes fast. I'm saying no seat in sight and 10 minutes later "here is your seat". Blew my mind. They make the close quarters work. Its a bit loud but what do you expect from a cement floor, sheet rock walls and hard wood adornments all over. I like listening into people's stupid conversations. Lets face it a sushi restaurant is the place to listen in on some pathetic convos. Try is, just saying. Okay back to the food and the rating. I have tried probably 25-35% of their menu. The more expensive rolls that you read the descriptions and say to yourself "Man that sounds great", are just that. So spend the extra $5. The simple rolls taste just that way simple. Not to imply they are bad, but why be cheap and let yourself down. That's what you would be doing. Why would you do that to yourself? Masochistic freak. Fried dumplings? Yes. Kind of a given but they are good enough to mention. Enough said. Service is a shade slow, not in the short bus sense, they know their shit. They are just so damn busy but they work with what they have and do it well. The plates come out all fancy looking, which they damn well better for the price. So yeah, no disappointment there. 4 stars Maru, that is all I have for you. Remember, the coolest kids in school were not the valedictorian or the jock, they were the unsuspecting artsy fartsy kid with clever wit and parents that let their friends drink. Whatever that means, keep up the good shit.

    The sushi was very light, fresh and tasty! Also, very healthy portions so keep that in mind before you order too much! Unfortunately, no liquor license yet but the french press teas are very flavorful and perfectly complement the sushi. The atmosphere is cozy and comfy. Such a great addition to the East Hills neighborhood! I will definitely be back!

    I live up North now, so any day that I get decent sushi is a good day. I got some take-out from Maru recently and had a pretty good experience. When I went in to pick up my order, the staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was nice. I had ordered the crunchy shrimp, spicy tuna and tarantula rolls. I know that sounds like a lot, ok it was a lot, but like I said...I have limited sushi access these days. Anyway, they were all pretty delicious. The tarantula was beautiful visually, but kind of messy to eat. Probably not date food, but it did taste good. The spicy tuna was tasty, obviously a standard. The crunchy shrimp was my favorite, lots of texture and flavor. Next time I go I plan on trying the yellow fever, which by the way, means that I definitely plan on returning.

    Great sushi. Our server was so nice and helpful. We had an excellent meal. The sushi was fresh and the rolls were great. When I'm back visiting in Michigan I will come again!!

    RUDE CHEF! I ordered a special order roll - and it was good enough that I went back to order it again. The waiter tells me, "The chef says he'll do this special order one more time for you but for future reference, don't order it again." What? I didn't like it THAT much - never mind! Not to mention - I noticed him being rude to his staff too!!

    I've only been there once when it was first open but I had major issues with the basics of their rolls. The rice texture was terrible, the integrity of the rolls poor (they kept falling apart as I tried to eat), and the vegetarian rolls I tried were full of such weird things (basil? yuck!). I should give them a second shot but I shudder at the idea of that loose rice.

    I had Maru To-go and I ordered the nigiri/sashimi combo and a tempura udon. The temp udon was good. The sashimi pieces were good, but in my opinion the nigiri was a little overboard on the fish to rice ratio. My mom is a sushi chef so I know the ratio. Another thing that bothered me was the unflavorful salad that came with the combo.... I don't need a salad with my nigiri... Just saying... Overall ok

    Amazing sushi bar. Has a great selection of sushi rolls, but we usually opt for the Chef's Platter & allow one of the chef's to make their own unique creations for us, that way it's always something unique (yellowtail is suburb). Hot teas & cocktails are delicious. I've never had any complaints about Maru's service (except for the long wait if you don't plan ahead, but then, who's fault is that?).

    After living 4 years in LA and being really spoiled when it comes to sushi, we did not have high hopes moving in GR. But thank goodness Maru opened has exceeded all expectations! We have gone 4 times and not once been disappointed. They do beautiful sashimi (escolare was incredible - we ordered 3 of the same dish one night!). Their sweet shrimp is to die for. Spicy crispy tuna - winner. The fancy rolls on the back like the Maru'velous are delish as well if you want more of an exciting roll experience. They have a variety of raw fish for sashimi lovers yet also the deep fried/cream cheesey options (crabby mushroom appetizer!) to please all pallettes. We are THRILLED that they are nearby and thriving!! Good luck getting a table at 7pm on a Saturday, this place is packed!

    Friendly staff, food was a bit slow to come out, but it was a busy Saturday night. Sushi was great and they also have creative fresh drinks. They have a restaurant in Lansing, Mich. that we also went to. Trendy atmosphere. We had the soy joy special rolls, California roll, nigiri tuna.

    Always looking for good sushi and in West Michigan its not always easy to find. The restaurant was very busy. No where to wait for a table, very tight space. We had no reservations but were able to score two seats at the sushi bar which ended up being more fun than a table. We got to see all the rolls as they were being prepared. We shared two rolls: Miss Saigon (very fresh with cilantro and cucumber) and crunchy spicy tuna (nice added spice level). The Blushing Geisha martini was also a refreshing twist on pink lemonade. Overall interesting unique take on sushi that left us excited to return and try more!

    Interesting rolls, reasonably fresh seafood for GR, nice upscale atmosphere. A good alternative to our other favorite GR sushi place, Sushi Kuni.

    We went to maru for lunch the other day and had a very pleasant experience. I'm fairly experienced in the sushi world and was impressed by both the quality and presentation of the items we ordered. we had several rolls, plus maguro and hamachi nigiri. i asked if they could make our edamame with togarashi to spice and it up and they were super nice about it. i noticed one reviewer said he didn't try the rolls as this is an americanized sushi joint, well most all sushi rolls are from the usa not japan, except for some basic maki rolls. the pricing might be all little high, but i don't believe a dollar or two is any big deal when the product is well above par. all in all i would recommend maru for those in grand rapids wanting some sushi. also, our server was very sweet, efficient, and attentive. 2 thumbs up maru!

    We went on a Sat night. We had reservations so there was no wait to get to our table. The decor was trendy, which we liked; a nice change from traditional look you see in a lot of the strip mall places. Our miso soup was good. The house salad was a much nicer presentation than what you get at other sushi places. The mussels appetizer was good, again more than you'd find at other places. Sushi rolls we had were just as good as what we've had elsewhere. The sexy bacon signature roll was awesome - unless you hate bacon. I don't know why a few others had a not good experience. Perhaps because it is still relatively new some staff is still getting used to the place. Our service was good and timely, especially for a Saturday night. We would definitely go back.

    Finally! As a Californian that has lived in Michigan on and off for the past 5 years I've been in search of good sushi in Grand Rapids. Many sushi places have disappointed; usually not fresh, too expensive and tiny portions. Tonight I went to dinner at Maru Sushi, and I finally have found my new go to sushi spot. Their sushi was fresh, huge portions, and most of all delicious! The prices were decent and a very well rounded menu. I look forward to my next dining experience. I'll definitely be back.

    BEST SUSHI IN GR! I am a huge sushi fan, and I'm also a vegetarian. I have a hard time with a lot of sushi places, because they often sell an avacado roll, cucumber roll, maybe one other variation, and nothing else. I've been a huge fan of Maru since I first went to their Okemos location about a year ago. They have several specialty vegetarian rolls with a variety of vegetables and tofu and different sauces, so I was automatically sold. Their GR location does not disappoint at all and gives me exactly what the Okemos location did, just closer to home. Sure, they are a bit pricey, but you do get a lot of sushi for what you pay for, and it is definitely high quality. The pricier rolls, like the $11 boogie veggie I get (SO DELICIOUS) comes with ten pieces, which is a lot more compared to the six pieces you get at a lot of sushi restaurants. I went on their opening weekend and the owner of both Maru locations greeted us, gave us our plates, checked up on us, and even shook our hands and said he recognized us from being at the other location and said he was happy to see us there. If that isn't hospitality, I don't know what is. If you like sushi, Maru will be your new favorite place to go in GR. If you don't like sushi, Maru will change your mind.

    This is my favorite place to order sushi. The atmosphere is not too fancy and they serve great food. I've only ordered sushi rolls so far and they are always delicious, my favorite being the crunchy salmon roll. Going here with a group of people is the best way to try it, order a bit of everything. If you have never tried mochi this is the place to do indulge in their dessert option.

    Revision: I did try a new roll... the Madagascar roll and I love really spicy but this I couldn't finish, it was a bit hard to eat because a spicy sriracha like sauce is dumped all over it, that makes it difficult if someone wanted a little less spicy, there is no escaping the sauce... overall good flavor but the spicy sauce with the serrano is a little overpowering you can't taste the fish. Best Sushi in Grand Rapids.. I'm from the west coast and have eaten some great sushi and Maru is the Best in Grand Rapids. I go here at least once every two weeks, when it first open the service was really bad and the food was good but presentation a bit inconsistent. Now I get the Soy Joy every time and it is usually delicious The only time it hasn't been was a few weeks ago it tasted a little too fishy but I went tonight and it was great! The only two real complaints is their apps and dessert... I have tried their potstickers many times and although the potstickers themselves have pretty good flavor their dipping sauce is very very oily and greasy and not very flavorful we always have to add soy sauce but it does't help very much. We always get the same dessert the chocolate truffle it is absolutely delicious but I feel like every time we go the portion gets smaller but the price stays the same when it first opened it was three huge scoops of the ganache and now it is only 2 small ones a couple blueberries a little raspberry sauce and some almonds still delicious but I want more! Overall a good place to go but there are a couple improvements to be made to make it amazing :)

    Where to begin with this place... At first seemed nice. Trendy setting with a cozy ambience. Server was very nice, friendly. Quick with drinks. Got the calamari appetizer. Was like chewing rubber! Way overdone with a sauce that is the exact replica of Bonefish's bang bang sauce. And when we sent it back the server tried to argue with us the meaning flash frying. Next we got a roll that had a weird variety of flavors, that had a HAIR in it! From that point I was convinced but my boyfriend persuaded me to try the next roll. NO FLAVOR! All you could taste was cream cheese with a mushy mouth feel. GROSS. Nice look but by my guess this hipster hotspot will fade away like the rest of them. Highly disappointed.

    i had high expectations after learning about the stellar service and food at their original lansing location. I have had my fair share of sushi all over the world including in Seoul and Japan. I may be no connosieur but I have more than fair knowledge about sushi and maki rolls in general. Anyway, when I dined in at Maru for lunch, I was rather disappointed. The specialty rolls were rather dull and the construction of them were not very solid; my rice kept crumbling after each bite. I also ordered the chef's pick sashimi set. They weren't the freshest I've ever had in Grand Rapids. Perhaps, my expectations were too high, but I wasn't overly impressed.

    Yummmm! Honestly I've never had better sushi! They also have excellent appetizers and desserts. It is a little pricer but it's definitely worth it plus it's sushi so what can you really expect? I highly recommend the Japanese mochi dessert :) enjoy yourselves I definitely did! I've also always had great service, no complaints there.

    My wife and I came in on one Wednesday evening and had one of the most complete meal at a Japanese restaurant ever. We travel a lot and had rather high expectations when we came. Hip and comfortable interior and great food. Each sushi rolls were carefully assembled and thoughtfully players. Not only the food beautiful it was one of the most fresh fish we have had in years. I loved mahalo and sexy bacon roll. I can't wait to come back to try the rest of the menu.

    This is the original location, and if you go here, make sure you get nothing but their sushi. Whether it is maki, nigiri, or sashimi, sushi is where it's at. We had been wanting to check this location out for quite some time now, and especially after Liz R. posted some tantalizing maki photos, it gave us extra reason to get there ASAP. :) We were definitely curious to see how this place stacked up to the Okemos (our regular spot) location. First off, sitting at the sushi bar is a lot of fun. The layout of this place is different from the Okemos one; more rectangular and a lot smaller. While the sushi bar at the Okemos location is further back in the restaurant, the sushi bar here is set up in the same space as the dining area. When we were there for dinner around 7pm, it was full, so space a little tight, but nothing worth fretting over. They certainly utilized the space very efficiently. Since we were sitting at the sushi bar, we got to see all the action. We started off with a complimentary amuse bouche of hamachi belly topped with a small fresh raspberry, served over a bed of soy mirin panko bread crumbs. It was such a nice surprise, and a simple palette cleanser. They run a pretty tight and organized ship over here, and the guys were slammed. Even though they were so busy, the quality and construction of the maki were excellent. Nice and tight, balanced ratio of rice to protein, and good temperature; all things to look for in a successful maki. Our Cosmo and Soy Joy maki (both $14) were tasty (better than what we had at the Okemos location), and priced appropriately for the portion. :) We also split a bowl of their tempura udon, and we liked the broth, but it wasn't memorable. Plus, for the $11 price, noodles in soup with 2 shrimp seemed high. It could definitely benefit the addition of wakame, scallions, fish cake, and even hard boiled or poached egg. To finish off our meal, we had 2 cups of hot green tea ($2 each). Overall, I'd definitely come back here when I'm in the area. Stick to their sushi offerings, and you'll be happy, satisfied, and know that money was well spent.

    Maru was very underwhelming to be quite honest. If you are looking for traditional sushi, this is not the place. Husband and I ordered the crouching tiger and lollipop (based on recommendations) as well as tuna nigiri. Pros: 1. Presentation - sushi looked beautiful 2. Staff - everyone was pleasant and attentive Cons: 1. Price - very overpriced for sushi. Been to many upscale sushi restaurants in SF and Detroit, and these were the highest prices for pretty basic rolls. Salad and soup are additional, which seemed odd. 2. Flavor - underwhelmed. 3. Sashimi selection - did not have Uni (pretty standard) or Toro.

    Maru, where to begin? [food] The sushi was good, I'm not really a picky eater so almost anything satisfies my craving. But to be honest, I didn't see much of a difference between the XO sushi and Maru besides the price. Maru sushi does have a little more of a dimensional flavor but for the price, I wouldn't agree with that friendship. [atmosphere] Great modern, sleek, and Indy feeling establishment. But... They desperately try to squeeze in as many table as possible and you're within elbows reach of the guests next to you. Not only was I sword fighting my guests with my elbow, I also heard my guests whole life story w/o really wanting to. [Service] My server was prompt and punctual. She spoke softly and amongst the crowded restaurant and ambient background music, it was hard to hear her sometimes. But I've been a server for 5 yrs so I know what it's like, so my condolences are with her bc I've lived through that hell of a job field. Overall she was good, not bad at all! I gave it 3 stars out of 5, because the food didn't really meet the standard of the price.. It was great sushi, but for the price of some of their specials it just didn't seem reasonable.

    This is my favorite restaurant in Grand Rapids. Best sushi, great service. If you are there on a weekend, ask for Stu, the best server of a staff of great folks. Ask Stu to guide you. He will lead you to try stuff you might otherwise not be adventurous enough try otherwise. The pick 2 lunch special is excellent as well. Great miso soup. With the pick 2 you can do both the miso and salad for an extra dollar.

    Maru is absolutely my favorite place to get sushi in Grand Rapids. With a great staff and delectable food, the place couldn't be better. I recommend the crouching tiger, mahalo and the papa crema. The best time to go is from 2:30-5:30 because there aren't many people and there's a mid-day special on all the food.

    Fantastic place for group/lunch! Amazing atmosphere. The food made this restaurant a top selection for a group lunch. We were in town for a conference and I called ahead of time asking if they could accommodate a group lunch of 20+. Everyone from the hostess, floor manager and wait staff were incredibly flexible, kind and prepared! We arrived (late) with a group of 12 (instead of 22) and seated promptly. They were very helpful to some first-time sushi eaters and everyone LOVED THE FOOD. GREAT EXPERIENCE. Definitely will make it back on my own with friends and family!

    I know what you're thinking... 'Fish in Michigan cannot be good. The Great Lakes fish have so much Mercury in them they could be used as a thermometer and Lord knows that if you catch a fish from the Grand River you don't eat it.' Well stop thinking that! Thought truthfully I have no idea where Maru gets their fish, each bite of sushi is easy leaps and bounds above the sushi in the Greater Grand Rapids area. The days of tingy, oxygenated, 2 week old fish slumped over a flavorless chunk of rice are over. To start, it was a slow night in Maru and I asked the Chef do a small tasting menu for my date and I. She was less versed in Sushi and I thought it would be fun to go from basic sushi to more extreme and exciting sushi as the course progressed. We began with many of the classics, Sake (Salmon) - Buri (Yellowtail) - Engawa (Fluke) - Hotategai (Scallops) - Anago (Saltwater Eel) - Unagi (Freshwater Eel) and then we got a little more adventurous. The final two courses were Amaebi (sweet shrimp) and the chef deep fried the heads and gave them to us to fully enjoy (if you've never sucked the deliciousness from the inside of a shrimp head, you're not living). It was truly good. The next course was an Iwashi (Baby Sardine) that was served fried and whole. It was amazing! The final course was the Tamago. Everywhere else I've eaten in Grand Rapids has had poor Tamago, flavorless and sulfuric as if they overcooked an omelet and put it over rice. This Tamago is the best I've had in America, minus what I ate at Morimoto in Philadelphia. In general, I think Maru will be bringing up the game and what is considered 'good sushi' in this state. I can't wait to see where they go in the next 5 years!

    Best sushi restaurant in Michigan! Papa Crema is by far my favorite, however all their signature rolls are to die for! I love their presentation, the atmosphere is great and their service is quick and everyone's really helpful!

    This is definitely the best sushi in Grand Rapids. They make tamago (egg) on their own instead of using the one from packages and it taste really good. They have many options for vegetarians. They have different kinds of sauce to go with different rolls and they are tasty. I keep going back once a week.

    The Crouching Tiger is incredible- this is my favorite sushi spot in GR! It's pretty pricey, especially for the premium rolls, but a great date spot or great spot for a celebration dinner. I'd highly recommend!

    The food was fresh and sublime! Loved the decor and atmosphere too. My only complaint is that the sashimi portions are a little on the small side given the price-tag. The waitress was wonderful and even my 5 year-old was very content.

    This place is an Instagrammer's paradise. I'm no expert on Japanese food, but the sushi is absolutely delicious and -- most of all -- the plate presentation is literally the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Those chefs back there are real artists. A server once mentioned that her hands are in hundreds of Instagram photos, and I don't doubt it. The rolls are so spectacularly assembled that you just have to take a picture. The atmosphere is great, too. It's a cheerful room with lots of natural sunlight, and beautiful modern decor. The staff have always been really, really helpful and knowledgeable about the food. They can explain every ingredient of every roll, and pass no judgement when I ask silly amateur questions. I consider a visit to Maru a real treat, and I can't wait to go again.

    Over priced sushi, not bad, but not very good either. It's a very nice restaurant for a date night, the decors nice; it just has a classy feel to it. They have a wide range of drink choices and types of sake. I definitely had a very nice experience at this establishment but when I go out for sushi, i'd like to eat good sushi, especially if they have their prices this high. I've given them a try multiple times, and the rolls just haven't been up to snuff for me. The fish didn't seem fresh. The rolls had already fallen apart by the time they hit the table. It just doesn't seem like any time was placed into crafting the rolls, ingredients seemed carelessly shoved together and quickly rolled in rice. I've had better rolls at XO during their half priced day. Not to mention I've had much higher quality sushi rolls at Sushi Yama at quarter the price. Maru's rolls flavor and crafting quality were more on par with Meijer's to-go sushi. Id bring a date back for some cucumber infused sake, but not if she liked good sushi. Maybe i'll try the Nigiri as some have suggested, and avoid the rolls.

    So good! We had 4 rolls between 4 of us: the Crouching Tiger, Soy Joy, Miss Saigon, and the Super Mario. They were all good and our server was very helpful and attentive! One of my friends has a serious shellfish allergy and she even substituted the shrimp in the Saigon roll for more tuna for us so she could eat it as well. All four of us work or have worked in the industry and none of us had even one complaint so you know it must be good!

    We ordered quite a few of the specialty rolls, which was a mistake. I hear that their typical sushi is much better. It was all huge portions, and very over the top. The individual pieces were stuffed so full it was difficult to eat. Service was a bit difficult to get at times. It felt like the restaurant equivalent of a spray-tanned woman with bleached blond hair, an insane pushup bra, crazy acrylic nails, 5 inch heels and a body con dress going out to the movies for a date. You don't have to try that hard, honey. The green tea ice cream was a pleasant surprise - and had a lovely presentation, but even it was a bit much.

    Can't wait to go back. We had 3 different veggie rolls, including one that was accompanied by their house guac (so good!) and another w/ sweet potato tempura. I rarely give 5 stars but the service here was amazing! Our server was excellent & the friendly manager stopped at our table since it was our first visit to welcome us, and later to check in.

    As good as it gets in GR, for sure. For sushi anyway. Definitely the best spot in town, hands down. I might even frequent it if it were in LA, except they'd have to lower their prices down there... you can easily find sushi of this quality for cheaper there. Here it's been a struggle to find anything remotely edible with remotely reasonable pricing... Tokyo Sushi in Kentwood has a $32 roll (LOLOL---a GR strip mall sushi joint. $30 roll... ROFLMAO - simmer down. At that rate it better be so fresh it's still flapping on my plate, which I know you can't deliver, not a so-called "sushi" roll you put CREAM CHEESE into! LOL) Anyway... now that I got that off my chest, like I said, Maru is the best in town, quality, freshness, portion and presentation-wise... also it's priced just fine when compared to other spots around town.

    Loved the Rio Grande, spicy tuna and California rolls! Some of the best I have ever had. The spicy cucumber and house salad were also both fantastic. Excellent drink menu. More expensive than some other traditional sushi restaurants I have been to, but the portions are large with many options to choose from, the atmosphere is inviting, and the service was great!

    So after my yelp review the GM of Maru contacted me and apologized and said he thought my experience was an anomaly due to a specific server and how busy they were and explained that the goal of Maru is to provide the best tasting, freshest sushi within a vibrant atmosphere. I let him know the specifics on my visit and he insisted on having me come back to Maru on the house to confirm whether it was an anomaly or not. As someone who takes my yelp reviewing seriously I told him I wouldn't come back unless there was no way the staff could know it was me, so I could provide an unbiased truthful review of my experience at the restaurant. He agreed. There seemed to be a little doubt about my self proclaimed sushi aficionado status, but the GM asked enough questions that I knew he could tell I had a genuinely bad experience and knew more about sushi than 99% of his average customers. Coming back, I wanted to try what I perceived to be the more difficult dishes to execute, including the mushroom crab appetizer, a sushi roll with 5-6 different types of fish inside it, and their crab bomb roll (or something like that). I have to say after the meal I actually felt awful that I left a poor review previously and am 100% convinced that it was an anomaly. For sure that has never happened before. Every single role was executed to perfection. The role with the 5+ fishes inside was one of the most well balanced harmoniously executed rolls I have ever had at a sushi joint. Anyone who eats sushi rolls with 5+ fish inside knows that one overpowering fish or fishy fish can ruin the roll very easily. The crab mushroom appetizer was also top notch. Who knew you could mix crab with mushroom and heat it, and not have it turn out mushy or have the crab or mushroom flavor wash out each other. Bottom line, really happy I had a chance to try this place again, and thrilled to be heading back in the future. Thanks Maru for going the extra mile to show me your quality after I had left such an undeserved bad review.

    I'm usually not a fan of sushi, but Maru Sushi and Grill has the best sushi! I love their k-pop roll, because it taste exactly like a korean dish! The service was ok. I wished the staff was a bit more attentive, but the food was divine. I will definitely return for the sushi!

    Best sushi place in GR. It's fresh so none of the raw food is mushy, they only have beautifully textured items. I also LOVE how they plate the sauce on the plate and not slathered all over the actual sushi. I like actually tasting the sushi, not cloaking it with mayo. The ambience is beautiful too, it's elegant without feeling too pretentious.

    Overpriced. If you do go, Only stick to the rolls and stay away from the chef's platter. We were stiffed today. There is no way that the smallish plate of sashimi and the two rolls we got were worth 70 bucks. Too much garnish and not enough substance. Whoever though that using pico de gallo( or any kind of salsa) on a roll was a good idea needs to be sent back to culinary school or to rehab. The dumplings came from a box and were lukewarm. The look of mechanically separated meat is unmistakable. The edamame was lukewarm as well. Lastly, to add insult to injury, we waited a long time for our check. Never going back.

    This is by far the best sushi place in Grand Rapids, ranking above the likes of Sushi Kuni, Ju Sushi Lounge, Tokyo Grill, XO and Mikado. I had my best sushi meal ever here, which is why I'm confused that Maru is ranked below 5 stars! Maru has a wonderful atmosphere, from the simplistic yet beautiful decor and the glass walls which gives the place a lot of light. A pleasant place to be on a sunny winter day. First of all, the service was impeccable - the wait staff was very kind and attentive, and because it was my group's first time to the restaurant, the chef gave us a free appetizer. We chose the stuffed mushrooms, which were delicious! As with most sushi joints, this place had great lunch specials, such as the pick 2 sushi rolls for $12-$14 bucks depending on which rolls you choose, which also comes with a soup or salad. The miso soup was one of the freshest batches I'd ever tasted. The crunchy shrimp and spicy tuna rolls were both wonderful. My table split the specialty roll, Sexy Bacon, which was phenomenal (it had bacon, so how can it go wrong?!). I'm excited to go back to try other rolls, appetizers, and their udon bowls. Definitely a wonderful new addition to the Eastown foodie scene!

    By far the best sushi in town. This is want quality and freshness taste like. I got something I knew I would like (spicy tuna). I gobbled that down faster than one can say spicy tuna roll; or so it seemed to me. Maybe I ate to quick because I found myself ordering more. I went out on a ledge and Reyes something new. I was not disappointed!! The speciality Crouching Tiger roll is so yummy. It is a California roll in the middle and then topped with a BBQ eel and a slightly spicy eel sauce. It rocked my socks! Everything was so beautifully composed and so tasty, it is so easy to eat with your eyes first here. I can't believe I didn't get a picture(s); probably because, I found myself gobbling it all up so quick to find time snap away.

    I am between a 3 and 4 star, but i decided to round up. This restaurant is located in a trend area of Grand Rapids and has very friendly service. The interior is very modern, yet has a warm atmosphere. I was really pleased with their unique sushi offerings. The french pressed tea was really good as well. They lost some points with be because the food was slow to come out. I have been there three times now, at varying times of day, and it seems that I always get to the point of looking to see how long ago I ordered my food. Overall I am pleased when I eat here and tell my friends to go try it out. The price point it just over my personal cusp of being too expensive to eat there as much as I'd like to. It's a more of a special occasion place for me.

    We were able to get a table last minute on a Saturday Night, We spent the holidays in Saugatuck MI, so we decided to go to Grand Rapids for diner. There were six of us we started with Surf and Turf Tempura, Soft Shell Crab and flash fried Octopus all were great. I ordered the green tea and someone else order the chestnut tea they both were phenomenal! I also order the tempura shrimp Udon soup that was absolutely delicious great balance of flavors. We each ordered our own rolls I had the sexy bacon roll, the creativeness the flavors and attention to details were outstanding. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. Also for you Scotch lovers out there the have a pretty awesome selection of Scotch, Check this place out you will not go wrong.

    The nigiri sushi here was very good. The quality and cuts if the fish might've been some of the best I've had in west Michigan area but the rest of the good selection was meh. The udon was very forgettable and not worth the high asking price. I would go here again but only for nigiri.

    One of the best sushi restaurants in GR. Highly recommend it. Try the Crouching Tiger. Definitely a hit. We each ordered something different and shared, and I have to say mine was the best. Reasonably priced for sit down sushi, but we skipped drinks. Wait staff was friendly and VERY willing to explain each item. Can't wait to go back!

    Rick, the manger invited us back with apologies about the previous experience we had. The second time, I was able to try the food which was delicious. The ambiance is nice and I was assured that they are family friendly. My only issue was the waiter was a little " douche- like" for lack of a better term. My boyfriend wanted a spicy salmon roll, and the waiter retorted " try again ".. On the grounds that myself and my brother were more adventurous with our food. My boyfriend isn't as adventurous with his food and was really embarrassed by the ordeal. I do still recommend Maru.. The management was on par and the food was good.

    After living on the east coast for five years, with good sushi places in every town, I had been missing and craving good sushi since moving back to Grand Rapids. I conducted facebook polls and asked around, then decided to head to Maru for my birthday dinner. We skipped the fanfare and unique menu items, and went straight for the sushi. We each ordered a standard roll to begin, and the split two specialty rolls. The long story short, is that the rolls were decent, and crafted well, but nothing blew me out of the water. I was curious as I read the menu that there were so many rolls that were crab based or shrimp tempura based, especially in an upscale sushi restaurant. Maybe this was because we're are in the midwest, and fresh seafood is not as available, but any sushi restaurant, no matter how good, is going to be using flash frozen fish, so I don't see being in the midwest as a barrier. Shrimp and crab based rolls (as the signature) feels low class to me. Even though this isn't the best review, I have to clearly say that this is a good restaurant. The food is very good, the atmosphere is fun, and the service was friendly and professional. It just wasn't the kind of sushi I expect for the price. The search for a good sushi place in GR continues.

    Finally good sushi in Grand Rapids! Very nice appearance from the moment you walk in the door. You can really tell that someone cared when building this place. Natural wood tones, concrete floor and industrial style ceiling; modern yet elegant. My wife and I were greeted immediately at the door by the owner, hostess, and a big greeting from all of the sushi chefs! We were then promptly seated and greeted by our server. My wife started with the maru punch (server recommendation) and I took a 90 minute ipa. The punch was surprisingly refreshing. The 90 minute needs no review as everyone should already know how great this beer is. We then proceeded with our our order of firecracker shrimp and some sort of sashimi salad. We are used to having typical tempura shrimp as an appetizer but these shrimp were anything but typical; panko fried and served with a sweet spicy sauce! The salad also, AMAZING! A vast assortment of almost every fish they have available served over a bed of greens. The fish was as fresh as if it were pulled out of the water and cut up just before we arrived. After appetizers we decided to go with the chef's special (another recommendation by our server). We were warned by our server that the particular item takes some extra time. At first I didn't understand why and became a little impatient. When the dish finally came out I totally understood why this work of art on my plate took a little extra time. There was an assortment of sashimi, nigiri, and this fancy roll presented in a way that almost looked too good to eat, almost. Again, AMAZING! My wife and I agree we have definitely found our new friday night out spot.

    Good and bad. I had went to Maru during the first month they were open. Good: Kama salad. One of the only places in GR that has Kama (yellowtail neck baked) with a nice glaze. This was big enough for me as a meal. Bad: Sushi. Not rolls because none of their rolls interested me in particular. One item I ordered was the amaebi (sweet shrimp) this fish comes with 2 pieces of sweet shrimp (raw) and 2 pieces of deep fried shrimp head. Initially as soon as I received my order, I observed that the color of the amaebi was yellow. And the tail had black holes in it. Which is perfectly normal and fine, shrimp have visible flaws! However from the premium price of Maru I at least expected the sushi chef to cut the flawed parts off. Is that not something to expect from ordering nigiri? Now the heads were poorly deep fried. The shell of its head was not crispy but more gritty and chewy. I believe it was because they didnt not coat it properly beforehand, or did not leave it in the oil long enough. The eel sauce they had provided to eat along with was.... Salty and was lacking the savory eel taste. Which is strange, but maybe they make their own version of eel sauce. Service was pleasant and friendly, no complaints there! They also had a variety of teas that you can purchase by the pot. I'd recommend it. So all in all I'd give it a 3. The atmosphere is pleasant like a cafe, and their menu was simple like one you would find in a coffee shop. I will have to return to try their fish again. I'd like to think it was a fluke with the staff being introduced to a new business.

    Best sushi in Grand Rapids. My favorites are the Crouching Tiger and Diva rolls. Food presentations are always done nice. The service is usually kind of slow, but not bad. Definitely worth trying if you haven't.

    I have been to Maru Sushi twice now, both times with well-traveled, experienced Sushi devouring friends who knew how and what to order. On my first trip, we honestly sampled everything from Edamame, Soup, Salad, Sexy Bacon and a Chef's platter..and yes Saki! It was fabulous! On my last visit, we wanted more Shashimi than Sushi, we gave free reign to our wonderful waitress Karen to let the Chef's create an eclectic platter for us...and we were thrilled! Not only is the presentation a work of art, but everything was delicious. My only complaint, and it will never stop me from going, is that although nicely appointed, the atmosphere is cold...I would have appreciated more warmth/texture to the environment. More room for tables, and there is absolutely no place to stand when waiting for a table..patrons block the entrance and crowd the sushi bar making it difficult for staff and uncomfortable for waiting.

    I didn't think it was great. Miso soup - recipe ok, soup just warm, tofu cold inside Grilled eel handroll - I don't think the eel was grill fresh for me (should be) Hibachi veggies - ok quality ingredients (should be superior), not cooked on an open flame (they claim that some kind of hot wok is the true hibachi and I disagree), accompanied by oily veggie fried rice (with frozen veggies?) You may like this food. I can't say I did. My bad for having high hopes. BTW: I did not try the raw fish - if I ever go back I'll give it a shot.

    I must say I am quite the sushi snob so to win my heart and belly over when it comes to sushi is a tough task! I'm OBSESSED with this place. Not only is the sushi delicious and creative. But the whole vibe of the place makes this restaurant for a really fun date night or night out with friends. The staff is above accommodating I always end up tipping them more just because my experience is always 5 star. Highly highly recommended. And don't shy away from the sexy bacon roll sushi snobs. It's beyond awesome !

    I recently dined at Maru with a friend of mine. I had heard only very good things about their restaurant in Okemos and I was very excited to try out the new GR location. Point being, I already had high expectations about their food. Starting with the positives, the service was great and the interior very pleasing. The main reason I was excited for the menu is because looking at it online, I loved the creativity behind their rolls, and the more simplicity all around with their menu that most GR Japanese restaurants lack. Now the negative. The food. Lack of freshness. We ordered two rolls and the chef's choice sashimi combination, and everything was just okay. I have had a lot of sashimi in my life, and Maru's was some of my least favorite. With the rolls, the ideas are much better on paper than when actually executed, for me at least. Also, if you can tell that the ebi in a roll isn't fresh (yes, ebi is cooked, but it was tough), even with a number of other ingredients that should mask something like that but doesn't, that is not a good sign whatsoever. I definitely want to give this place another try. It is new, and I love sushi. Perhaps my second time will be better.

    Finally, a higher-end Sushi restaurant in my neighborhood. How lovely it is to be able to go to a nice restaurant, get a good glass of wine, and dine on some fresh and innovative sushi! The restaurant is located on booming Cheery Street. I am not a huge fan of the minimal decor. It is a tad cold for my taste, and the design does not allow for many places to sit for an intimate dinner. The suhi is the best I have had in this city. There is a nice selection of first course items (the house salad is perfect...the qual egg is a nice touch), nigiri, and sushi rolls. I have not tried any of the hibachi meals, because that is not what I am going for. I would not consider Maru pricy, considering the quality of the food and the location. The servers are kind of flighty, so if you are in a hurry, good luck! Overall, try it out. We need some "nice" restaurants in this part of Grand Rapids. It is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood.

    Good service, sushi and atmosphere. Crouching tiger roll was a winner! Overall good execution. I'd give it 3.5 stars --definitely worth a try! Plus, it's in the coolest neighborhood in Grand Rapids! Definitely a date-sushi joint. Kind of a hipster joint. A bit pricey, but tasty. If you haven't been give it a try. Also...the squid salad is yummy.....but keep in mind its just squid...no lettuce or salad stuff. :) Nice dining outside too when the weather is good.

    Really wanted this to be a great place after all the great reviews of the EL location. They built a beautiful restaurant and have tremendous potential to offer a sushi choice in the Eastown neighborhood. We went on a Sunday, at 3pm, at a time there were only four other tables. After our appetizer which was promptly served, we waited 1hr05min for our sushi with no apologies or communications from the server. With great expectation, our sushi arrived....it looked good, and was ok but not great. The fish was room temperature, as if it had been sitting out and the rolls themselves were ok but not real flavorful. At $15-17 per roll, I was disappointed at the quality and would rather go back to the strip mall sushi location that we have frequented for years and enjoy. Will probably give this place one more chance after they get some more experience. I want this place to be good and succeed but am worried after our experience.

    Friend and I got sick after eating here, like throwing up sick, different onsets but doctor linked to sushi. I gave 2 stars because I've eaten here before with no problems. However, I would just encourage the establishment to work extra hard at sanitation. Being sick is not fun and raw fish is nothing to play with. Grand Rapids can't afford to lose a sushi spot because there's nothing else around, from what I can see. I love sushi but unfortunately won't be back for awhile.

    They just opened and I think they are doing great! I stopped in with my mom on their second night of being open and I seriously loved everything about this place. The owner greeted us and the server was knowledgeable. My mom got some of the french pressed loose leaf tea and the owner came over and pressed it and poured it for her when it was ready, then filled it with more water for a second brewing. Great service! We split three rolls, which ended up being way too much food (but wouldn't have been if my husband had been there instead of my mom, lol). But that is the best way to keep me coming back for more. Serving size is important to me. :) My mom is not a huge fan of the raw fish aspect of sushi, since she is still new to sushi, we got the veggie boogie and crouching tiger roll. Our server suggested the soy joy, but warned us that is had raw fish, since I mentioned that she was nervous about it. My mom LOVED it! Her first raw fish experience was a top notch one. I will be back. Also, make sure you check their facebook page for specials! I love a deal.

    Best sushi restaurant in Michigan. Along with the east Lansing location. The marvelous and crouching tiger hidden dragon are my two favorite rolls. The best thing about Maru is their variety of fresh fish. They have different and exotic fish in every week, and always the best quality. It is expensive, but sushi is expensive, so you can't complain.

    Always love going to Maru. Make sure you put in a reservation though if you plan on eating after 530-6 pm. They need 2 hours for you to get one. The staff is fantastic and attentive. I'm not a huge Sushi fan so I usually go with the sexy bacon or the crouching tiger which is my favorite. They also have an hibachi grill as well. Also Derek=great server.

    Sushi with large dose of flare! Their creativity from their sushi creations to the names of their rolls on the menu sets them a part from any sushi restaurant I have ever been to. The rolls are truly masterpieces when they arrive plated at your table. It is hard to actually want to eat it, knowing someone spent a lot of time working on it-ha! Okay, lets be honest, that wait lasts about 5 seconds before I dive in, eating something as delicious as it looks. I don't want to dock them any starts like one may think due to their range of 'authentic' sushi rolls, because they do have about a dozen or so of those on the menu, it just isn't something they are trying to highlight! Come to Maru and get crazy is some new sushi creations. They have sushi, even for non sushi lovers with rolls filled with meat or just veggies. My personal favorite is the lollipop because it is a few different types of fish wrapped in cucumber instead of the traditions rice. It is expensive but sushi is expensive so no surprise there. Also they have a great drink selection from sake, to japanese wines and beers to craft beer! Oh and a great selection on tea!

    Stopped in for lunch a few times and while the presentation is lovely, the food itself isn't outstanding. The sushi rice was a little too moist--while it wasn't mushy exactly, it was rather heavy and the rolls all fell apart at first touch. We stood a few minutes waiting for someone to seat us, rather surprising as it was pretty slow--it was well between the lunch and dinner crowd and a couple employees were standing around and chatting, yet didn't seem to have the time or motivation to come help us. Our server was polite and friendly, but was unaware that the appetizer we ordered was out of stock--while I understand that the yellowtail collar has limited availability, it seems rather unprofessional to be unaware that you are out of stock, before allowing a customer to order it. The appetizer we ordered to replace it was out of stock as well, which we were not informed of until our meal was coming out--obviously, we weren't interested in ordering a replacement appetizer yet another time, so we declined and just had our rolls. Once we had finished, it took a ridiculously long time to get our check--during which we observed our server going to several other tables, standing at the bar, and chatting with fellow employees. If the service had been better, I would have been happy to leave 4/5 stars. However, the lackluster service knocked it down a notch. There are other places to be found in Grand Rapids with more authentic cuisine, and better service.

    I was very excited about a Sushi place in my neighborhood, I however was not excited about how bastardized and non authentic some of the menu items were. I don't remember what I ordered (probably eel) but I ended up ordering something overpriced that tasted lukewarm and bland. This place is nice if you want to feel trendy and eat comfort food in sushi format or to bring your mother whom has never tried sushi before. Service is good, no complaints there, but it was also mid-day and there were 2 other tables so I cant vouch for thier busy times. I'll stick to driving (not walking) a little bit further and spending the same amount on what 'Ju' on E. Paris offers. Don't get me wrong, it was far from the worst sushi I've ever gotten but nothing about the food I received for the price I was paying makes me want to go back.

However, one of the shining stars on the menu is actually in the Sharing Plates section of the menu; the Crabby Mushrooms are a must have! Also the plate presentation is Beautiful and the sushi is just as good as it looks.

    I might be a little biased after just coming back from Asia, but this place definitely did not meet my expectations. The place is a heavily-American operated restaurant, and therefore has many Americanized dishes. Specific dishes: I first had kimchi with rice as a snack/appetizer- pretty spicy, but standard for most kimchi. I had two different types of Nigiri- salmon and tuna. The fish was decent and you definitely get a lot, but it is almost too much for the small size of rice underneath. Also a bit pricy for nigiri, at $7 for Tuna, and $6 for Salmon. Next, I had the Yellow Fever Roll, which is a specialty roll that is supposed to come with Yellow Tail, cilantro, cucumber, basil underneath and a jalapeño slice on top. Well they were out of Yellowtail (which is ridiculous for a sushi place!!) so I got salmon instead. The basil and cilantro was quite unique and not common for sushi. Cilantro was unnecessary, and the basil was interesting, but again odd for a sushi roll. I was charged $9 for the roll even with the fact I had salmon instead of yellowtail. Comments from my dining partners about their dishes: Miss Saigon Roll- well priced for the size of the roll ($14) a good sauce complemented the dish- Thai chili/Hoisin sauce, no need for extra soy sauce. Cilantro was an unsuspecting surprise as well, that elevated the dish. Sashimi salad- mixed fish, and vegetables, with only one piece of shrimp- terrible portion for a crazy $18 price. Overall, over-priced, decent sushi, nothing exceptional, very Americanized (not authentic at all). Better places in town.

    I appreciate the innovation of the rolls at Maru, but I feel that the sushi is slightly overpriced for what you get. Don't come here for "authentic" sushi... if you read any of the menu you will notice this right away. The quality of the fish has always been excellent every time I've gone.

    This our absolute favorite place to eat. We hardly ever try anything different in Grand Rapids because this place is just so awesome. We've eaten at three of the Maru restaurants and the sushi is always consistent and identical. We've never had a bad experience. If you want great sushi, eat here. They also honored our son when he came home on leave from the Air Force. He was in uniform and at the time we received out bill they paid his on the house. Support those places that support servicemen and women.

    This is undoubtedly the BEST sushi in Grand Rapids. We were looking for a place to eat and stopped in to glance over the menu, and were greeted by an incredibly friendly staff- the manager was so sweet to us. The food did not disappoint. Not only is everything perfectly fresh and delicious, but the service is fast and the presentation is beautiful. Dessert is a MUST as well, we had the chocolate truffle (I think thats what it was called), and it was incredible. Worth the money!
